What is different about coverage in New Jersey

New Jersey Medicaid, called NJ FamilyCare, is run by the Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services, and New Jersey runs its own state-based ACA marketplace, Get Covered New Jersey, instead of the federal HealthCare.gov site. New Jersey Insurance Plans is free to use for New Jersey callers working through Medicare, ACA, life, or supplemental coverage questions.

  • New Jersey Medicaid, called NJ FamilyCare, is administered by the Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS) within the Department of Human Services -- DMAHS is the right place to start if your NJ FamilyCare eligibility changed.
  • New Jersey runs its own ACA marketplace, Get Covered New Jersey, operated by the state's Department of Banking and Insurance since 2020, replacing HealthCare.gov for New Jersey ACA shoppers.
  • Free Medicare counseling is available in New Jersey through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at 1-800-792-8820, separate from New Jersey Insurance Plans's own free phone help.

Worth knowing: Get Covered New Jersey is run directly by the state's insurance regulator, the Department of Banking and Insurance, and layers a state-funded subsidy (New Jersey Health Plan Savings) on top of federal premium tax credits -- a combination unique to New Jersey's marketplace.
